Leif Eriksson (=hijo de Erik), alias "El afortunado". Hijo del explorador Erik el Rojo, continuó la tarea de colonizar hacia el oeste iniciada por su padre. Alrededor del año 1000, guiado por los relatos del comerciante Bjarni Herjolfsson, se dirigió hacia el oeste y pasó un invierno en una tierra a la que denominó Vinland, a la que describió como abundante en salmones y pastizales. Su campamento constituye el primer asentamiento europeo en América, quinientos años antes que Colón. Su hermano Thorvald fue el primer europeo en tener contacto con indígenas americanos, y también su primera víctima. El campamento, Leifbundir, estaba ubicado en el extremo norte de la isla de Terranova, en el lugar conocido actualmente como L'Anse aux Meadows y duró sólo unas décadas antes de ser abandonado, debido a la hostilidad de los indígenas.
